Second forum Aug. 26 for College of Medicine dean candidate

Faculty, staff and students are invited to meet one of UNMC’s College of Medicine dean candidates, Tuesday, Aug. 26, in the second of four candidate forums. Robert Marier, M.D., professor and acting dean, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Public Health, New Orleans, La., will be available from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. in the College of Nursing, Room 2017.

The “Ask the Candidate” forums kicked off Aug. 21 with John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., chairman, department of internal medicine, UNMC. Additional forums are planned for Tuesday, Sept. 23, with Bradford Schwartz, M.D., regional dean and professor of medicine and biochemistry, The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Ill.; and Thursday, Sept. 25 (candidate to be announced at a later date).

Dr. Marier graduated from Boston College and Yale Medical School. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in infectious disease at Yale University Medical School. He served in the United States Public Health Service as an epidemic intelligence officer at the Centers for Disease Control before joining the faculty at Yale in the department of medicine.

Dr. Marier moved to New Orleans with his appointment to the LSU Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in New Orleans where he is a professor of medicine and public health. At LSU he has served as medical director of Charity Hospital, chairman of the department of public health and preventive medicine, director of the State Public Hospital System (1997- 1999), dean of the School of Medicine (1995 – 2002), chairman of the board of the LSU Faculty Group Practice Corporation (1995 – 2002) and acting dean of the LSU School of Public Health (2003 – present).
