Since 1992, the Stork’s Nest has served more than 7,000 women in the Omaha area. The Stork’s Nest mission is to help give babies a healthier start in life and strives to encourage self-esteem and parenting skills by providing incentives for healthy behaviors.

The Stork’s Nest serves mothers who are pregnant or parenting a child younger than two years of age and meet income guidelines. Women are referred to the Stork’s Nest by a health care provider and earn points by demonstrating healthy behaviors, such as attending doctor visits, smoking cessation, breastfeeding, and completing educational programs.

“Mothers are able to redeem the points they’ve earned from following a healthy lifestyle and getting regular prenatal care to purchase maternity or baby clothes and nursery items,” explains Bridget Brown, the Stork Nest’s coordinator. “Oftentimes they need the basics, like diapers or bottles. Others save their points to get larger items like digital ear thermometers or breast pumps,” she continued.

A national program, Stork’s Nest is sponsored locally by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the March of Dimes in conjunction with The Nebraska Medical Center and UNMC. The Stork’s Nest is located on the fourth floor of the Durham Outpatient Center at the Olson Center for Women’s Health and UNMC Physicians Baker Place. Hours vary for each location.
