Maybank named associate to the NU president

picture disc.University of Nebraska President L. Dennis Smith, Ph.D., has announced the appointment of Dr. Denise B. Maybank as associate to the president. She replaces Dr. Shari Clarke who was appointed vice president for student affairs of Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pa., in June.

Dr. Maybank will assist the president in ensuring the university continues to be a diverse and equitable environment, in formulating and implementing policies and strategies for enhancing the gender and racial/ethnic diversity of the university, and assisting the president in developing the means to assess the university’s progress in enhancing diversity and equity. Dr. Maybank has been director of multicultural affairs at the University of Nebraska at Omaha since July 2001.

“Dr. Maybank has been very effective in directing and maintaining programs for the recruitment, retention and development of diversity at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She has the right combination of experience and enthusiasm to continue and enhance the programs started by Dr. Clarke,” Dr. Smith said.

“The opportunity to continue serving the University of Nebraska in the role of associate to the president is an honor. The uniqueness of the campuses holds great promise for the enhancement of existing programs and the creation of new collaborative initiatives that will position the university for distinction in the areas of diversity and equity,” Dr. Maybank said. “I’m excited to continue the work begun by Dr. Clarke with the entire university community.”

Dr. Maybank’s appointment is effective Oct. 1. She earned her doctorate of philosophy in counseling psychology from Michigan State University. She also holds a master of arts in educational administration from Columbia University and a bachelor of arts in elementary education from Brooklyn College, CUNY. Her salary will be $86,000.
