UNMC for the record

When UNMC broke ground for the Lozier Center for Pharmacy Sciences and Education and Center for Drug Discovery in June, classes were officially out. So when the students came back for the new academic year, the College of Pharmacy invited them to take part in a second groundbreaking. Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., and Courtney Fletcher, Pharm.D., dean of pharmacy, made a few brief remarks and then invited student representatives, shown at right, to man golden shovels and turn some ceremonial dirt. A picnic lunch followed, and students, faculty and supporters of the College of Pharmacy ate hamburgers and hot dogs in the sun. For a Flickr slideshow of the event, click here.

Ward Chambers, M.D.
Ward Chambers, M.D., executive director of international health and medical education at UNMC, will be honored today with a 2013 Faculty-Alumni Award from the alumni association of his undergraduate alma mater, the University of Missouri. In addition to Dr. Chambers’ many achievements, including serving as a mentor to underprivileged teenagers, the university noted that Dr. Chambers helped initiate a program at Missouri, the Chambers Diversity Leadership Academy, to mentor engineering students. He also has funded two minority engineering scholarships at the university. The Mizzou Alumni Association’s Faculty-Alumni Awards were started in 1968. The awards recognize the achievement of University of Missouri faculty and alumni for their accomplishments in professional life as well as services to their alma mater.
