Former UNMC human resource director, Geoff Brown, dies

Geoff Brown of Omaha, former UNMC human resource director, died Sept. 3, after a short battle with cancer. He was 59.

A memorial service will be Saturday (Sept. 6) at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 7020 Cass St., followed by a private internment.

Brown served as assistant director of human resources from June 1983 to November 1985, before serving as director through September of 1987. He was instrumental in moving UNMC from a standard benefits plan to NU Flex, the university’s current flexible benefits structure.

“That was a major accomplishment,” said UNMC Human Resources Executive Director John Russell, who worked with Brown while at the University of Nebraska Central Administration. “In 2003, this is still our basic benefits structure so it has stood the test of time.

“Geoff was one of the most team-oriented, get-the-job-done-right people you’d ever meet,” Russell said. “He was very highly regarded by the other human resource directors within the university system.”

Brown left the university to join ACI (Applied Communications Inc.), a technology company. He later worked at Ameritas Financial Center in Lincoln as a training and development director.

“He was a pleasure to work with and had a great sense of humor,” Russell said. “It’s part of the personality we’re going to miss.”

Brown is survived by his wife, Carol; mother, Doris Beeby; sons, Tyler and Wesley; daughter, Paige; brother, Alex; sisters, Bonnie Domin, Anne Beeby and Sam Herchak.
