College of Medicine dean candidate forum Sept. 23

Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the third of four forums scheduled for UNMC’s College of Medicine dean candidates. The “Ask the Candidate” forum for Bradford S. Schwartz, M.D., regional dean and professor of medicine and biochemistry, The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Ill., will be Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. in the College of Nursing, Room 2017.

David Chestnut, M.D., Alfred Habeeb professor and chair of anesthesiology, and professor of obstetrics and gynecology, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will be available at the final candidate forum Thursday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 a.m. in the College of Nursing, Room 2017.

Dr. Schwartz has served as regional dean and professor of biochemistry and medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign since June 1999. His scientific research focuses on regulation of protease activity, especially in regard to blood coagulation and fibrinolysis.

Prior to coming to Urbana, Dr. Schwartz was director of the MD/PhD program at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Concurrently, he was a member of the graduate faculty in the department of biomolecular chemistry and was professor in the section of hematology in the department of medicine, where he was vice chairman from 1994-97. He also was a hematologist for 17 years at the University of Wisconsin, where his main focus was on disorders of hemostasis.

Dr. Schwartz was included in America’s Best Doctors in 1996 and in 1997; was the recipient of an NIH Research Career Development Award; NIH New Investigator Research Award; a Hartford Fellowship; and research grants from the NIH, the Veteran’s Administration, and the American Heart Association. Dr. Schwartz is most proud of his teaching accomplishments, having been voted Outstanding Teacher on three occasions by medical students and residents.

Dr. Schwartz currently serves as chairman of the American Society of Hematology’s Committee on Publications. He has served on NIH Hematology Study Sections, the American Heart Association National Study Section, and the American Heart Association National Policy Council.
