Wellness Wednesday: Walking through the cold-weather season

It’s tempting to consider curling up and “hibernating” through the winter, at least as far as fitness goes.

But if the cold weather has you down, the Center for Healthy Living is offering a low-cost option to stay warm while keeping a fitness routine.

The center has a limited-use membership option, which gives access to the walking track and the shower facilities for a limited price. Click here for more information.

“Walking regularly is a wonderful, low-impact aerobic exercise,” said Peter Pellerito, a fitness specialist at the center. “People may be surprised how quickly their fitness improves when they begin walking regularly several times a week.”

Pellerito added that there are waking options beyond the center’s track. For more information about walking routes on campus, click here.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services lists brisk walking among its recommended moderate aerobic activities and suggests walks of 10 minutes or more, building toward 150 minutes of activity a week. (For a complete list of moderate and vigorous activities, click here.)

An avid walker …..I can't seem to make myself run ….I love the "feets-on- the-ground" approach to my
exercise regime…plus it takes me places…at a pace I can enjoy the scenery and sometimes the solitude
of nature. Good idea for winter days in Nebraska….I agree whole-heartedly!!
