Fire alarm testing set for Thursday at University Tower

Testing of the new fire alarm system recently installed in the University Tower units II, III and IV (all areas) will take place Thursday, Feb. 6, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

What makes this test different is the audible portion of the test will be performed with the actual alert message rather than the music. This audible test will last approximately 30 minutes, with the entire fire alarm system sounding continuously, with the actual alert message and strobes.

The alarm will consist of four tones, a voice message and 24 seconds of silence before repeating. The remainder of the testing should not interrupt our staff, patients and visitors. This should be the final act of acceptance testing of the new system by the state fire marshal. The new alarm system came about as a result of a 2009 Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) visit. It is the final action requested by CMS.

In an effort to try to reduce the impact that this testing will have on patients, staff and visitors, there will be ear muffs and ear plugs available. These items will be delivered to the nursing staff on each of the floors.

Also, as a small gesture of appreciation for the patients and staff, there will be refreshments available at various locations throughout the University Tower during the 30-minute audible testing.

Your understanding and cooperation is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, or require additional information, please contact facilities at 2-3347.
