UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., is the inaugural subject of a new feature in the American Medical Association’s monthly online newsletter, AMA MEdEd Update.

The feature, “Why I serve,” profiles a leader in medical education and the AMA. Dr. Gold has been a member of the AMA since the early 1980s, and he is a member of the AMA’s Council on Medical Education.

In the interview, Dr. Gold explains the importance of the AMA by saying he believes it is the voice for American physicians.

He also speaks on subjects such as vital issues facing medical education and qualities of leadership.

When asked for the brief advice he would give medical students or physicians in training, he responds:

“The practice of medicine is among the most satisfying careers you can possibly pursue in life. It’s a great career; it gives you tremendous flexibility, the respect of your colleagues and the community, and the opportunity to take on a leadership role in your community and nationally.”
