Jennifer McWilliams, M.D.

Jennifer McWilliams, M.D., is a new faculty member in the College of Medicine. Here’s a brief rundown of her background and the expertise she brings to UNMC.

  • Name: Jennifer McWilliams, M.D.
  • Hometown: Omaha
  • New title and department at UNMC: Acting division chief, division of child and adolescent psychiatry, department of psychiatry.

Telemedicine, health care delivery models and access to care.

How I fell in love with psychiatry:
I was an English literature major as an undergraduate, and I always loved hearing people’s life stories. At the same time, I always was fascinated with biology and chemistry. Psychiatry is the perfect intersection. I continue to be fascinated by how our “stories” impact our biology and how our biology impacts our “stories.”

Degrees:

  • Masters in health care delivery science, Dartmouth College, January 2014.
  • Residency and fellowship, child and adolescent psychiatry, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, June 2009.
  • M.D., UNMC, June 2004.

Previous Positions:

  • Director of clinical services for child and adolescent psychiatry, department of psychiatry, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, 2009 to 2014.

Memberships:

  • American Psychiatric Association
  • American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
  • American Telemedicine Association

Three things people may not know about me:

  • I’ve been skydiving, scuba diving and rock climbing.
  • I’m scared of Ferris wheels.
  • I want to be an architect in my next career.
