Sarah Gillis, M.D.
Sarah Gillis, M.D., is a new faculty member in the College of Medicine. Here’s a brief rundown of her background and the expertise she brings to UNMC.

  • Name: Sarah Gillis, M.D.
  • Hometown: Cleveland
  • New title and department at UNMC: Assistant professor of medicine, Internal Medicine

Research/professional interests:
Diabetes and the prevention of diabetes, thyroid disease, thyroid cancer, polycystic ovarian disease, obesity.

How I fell in love with endocrinology:
I was fascinated by the cognitive aspects of endocrinology and the intricacies of hormones in medical school and residency. I find endocrinology to be an exciting and diverse field. The capacity to quickly reverse life-threatening disorders, the interplay between endocrinology and every other organ system and the ability to provide crucial preventive care to our patients is what I find so appealing. In addition, in our field we have the opportunity to form long-lasting relationships with patients and families, which I love.

Degrees:

  • B.S./M.D., University of Akron and Northeast Ohio Medical University.

Previous Positions:

  • Chief of endocrinology, Wright Patterson Medical Center, Wright Patterson Air Force Base.
  • Medical director, Wright Patterson Medical Center’s Weight Loss Clinic.
  • United States Air Force executive council member for the prevention of obesity.
  • Internal medicine residency research coordinator at Wright Patterson Medical Center.
  • Education committee member of the internal medicine residency program, Wright Patterson Medical Center.

Memberships:

  • American College of Physicians
  • Endocrine Society
  • American Society of Clinical Endocrinologists
  • American Thyroid Association

Clinic/Locations:
The Nebraska Medical Center Diabetes Center, Bariatric Center and VA Hospital. To refer a patient, contact the new patient scheduler at 402-559-8700.

Three things people may not know about me:

  • I love to garden and enjoy farmers’ markets — at my last job I collaborated in creating a medical garden clinic for our hospital.
  • I enjoy running and am training for the Warrior Dash here in Nebraska with my family.
  • I think the BBC/PBS show “Sherlock” with Benedict Cumberbatch is brilliant, and I love a good mystery.

We are very excited to have Dr. Gillis join us at the Bariatrics Center. We think she will add an important resource for diabetics who are interested in medical weight loss and bariatric surgery
