Steven Wengel, M.D.

UNMC’s Steven Wengel, M.D., chair of the department of psychiatry, will be joined by Peter Yellowlees, M.D., of the University of California-Davis, to present “Wellness, Stress Management and You: How’s Your Amygdala Today?” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 4 in the Sorrell Center, Room 1005.

Modern life is stressful for a variety of reasons. The health care industry has its own unique stresses, due to the nature of the work itself coupled with major changes because of health care reform. Surveys of physicians, nurses, and students reveal high rates of stress.

In this workshop, Drs. Wengel and Yellowlees will discuss the range of issues facing health care students and workers which produce stress, help them monitor their own reactions to stress and give them several tools that they can take with them and implement immediately.

At the conclusion of the presentation, participants should be better able to:

  • Appraise the range of stressors in the contemporary health care workplace.
  • Describe the physiological effects, positive and negative, of stress on human health.
  • List three practical strategies an individual can use to reduce their own stress and improve their wellbeing.
