“Sexual Assault: A Rising Epidemic — How to Respond as a Health Professional” is the topic of a panel discussion for the April 1 Schwartz Center Rounds.
The seminar is from noon to 1 p.m. in the Sorrell Center, Room 2014.
The UNMC College of Public Health service learning project, EMPOWER, will host the panel, which will be led by Sue Michalski, a domestic violence survivor and a sexual assault nurse examiner. The panel will explore the challenges and the ways to recognize and respond to victims of domestic violence or assault.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
“Members of the EMPOWER group and this panel hope the presentation will assist future and current health professionals to provide better care for affected patients,” Michalski said.
The other panelists are:
- Julie Rannells, a Women’s Center for Advancement Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Victim’s Advocate for the past 26 years.
- Anne Boatright, a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) and the SANE coordinator at Methodist Hospital.
EMPOWER will also host a screening of the documentary “Girl Rising” on April 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Sorrell Center, Room 2010. The movie follows 9 young girls from around the world as they fight for education. View the trailer here.
EMPOWER, a legacy project of the Service Learning Academy, provides education sessions and basic health screenings through collaboration with the Women’s Center for Advancement, empowering those affected by domestic violence and poverty through knowledge of their personal health. The group also hosts other events and a monthly discussion group on campus to raise awareness about this issue.
EMPOWER was recognized at the White House last year as a Champion for Change Project.
Lunch will be provided for the first 65 attendees.
