2003 Andy Award recipients announced

Three staff members from the Lincoln Journal Star are the 2003 recipients of the Andy Award.

Presented annually by International Studies and Programs at UNMC and the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), the award recognizes a member or members of the Nebraska news media whose coverage best enhances the international awareness of Nebraskans.

The recipients were honored at a luncheon held Oct. 6 at the Milo Bail Student Center on the UNO campus. The award includes a cash prize of $1,000.

Photographer Ken Blackbird, reporter Joe Duggan and Sunday editor Catharine Huddle were honored for “Cuba: An Elusive Truth.” The trio contributed stories and photos to the Journal Star as well as to an in-depth report published in magazine format by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications. Huddle served as copy editor for the magazine, in addition to editing Duggan’s stories for the Journal Star and writing her own account of life in Cuba. This fall, the Journal Star published a three-day series of student stories from the magazine.

In addition to the 2003 Andy Award recipients, winners of the 2003 Andersen-Gouttierre Awards were announced. The Andersen-Gouttierre Endowment funds the Andy Award and the Andersen-Gouttierre Awards. The latter recognizes the contributions of faculty and staff at UNO in enhancing the international awareness of Nebraskans. It is accompanied by a $1,000 cash award.

The 2003 Andersen-Gouttierre Award recipients are as follows:

  • James Saker, professor of music, UNO College of Fine Arts;
  • Joong-Gun Chung, professor of political science, UNO College of Arts and Sciences; and
  • Merry Ellen Turner, director of international programs at UNO.

The Andy Award is named in honor of Harold Andersen, former chairman and chief executive officer of the Omaha World-Herald. All of the cash awards are made possible by a gift from Andersen and his wife, Marian, to International Studies and Programs at UNO and UNMC.
