Kathy (McCormack) Sova

Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee.
This week, we learn more about:

  • Name: Kathy (McCormack) Sova
  • Hometown: Omaha
  • No. of years at UNMC: 40 years

Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.

I started at the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute as a receptionist in 1974. I transferred to the receptionist desk for radiology in 1978 and later provided administrative assistance to two radiologists, Roger Harned, M.D., and Charles Dobry, M.D. I moved to the east coast in 1987, but I returned to UNMC in 1988 and have been with the division of general internal medicine since. I provide administrative assistance to our chair, Tom Tape, M.D., along with other members/staff for our division. I enjoy my job and the people I work with. There is such variety of members/staff within our division, which creates a variety of personalities too. I had the great pleasure of working with the late LeeRoy Meyer, M.D., for many years and truly miss our morning chats. I have witnessed so many changes over the last 40 years and have made such great friendships along the way as well.

Working together is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time that you were impressed with how people work together at UNMC.
Teamwork along with friendship is very important within our division. Each of us working as a team player to accomplish goals and deadlines is a key factor in many of our projects and daily activities. Faculty and staff come together to resolve issues/crisis that may arise.

What is your favorite spring activity?

Being able to spend time outdoors with our two grandsons, AJ (5 ½ years) and Logan (3).

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I went to China in 2002 to assist a friend with bringing home her new baby girl and my goddaughter. I became the adopted “aunt” to the other families we traveled with and hear from them each year.
  • I enjoy quilting and shopping at quilt shops.
  • I work with at least two people at UNMC whose dads I have worked with before them. They are Lisa Runco (daughter of the late Dr. Dobry) and Dr. Scott Menolascino (son of the late Frank Menolascino, M.D.).
