Proposal, reporting strategies examined

Two new sessions are scheduled for the Research User Group in April and May. Registration is recommended, but not required, through email or by going to EServ and clicking the Education link.

  • Preparation of Competitive Grant Proposals: Preliminary Steps: 1:30-3 p.m. on April 30, Durham Research Center, Room 1004. This session, presented by Melody Montgomery, editorial grants specialist for the office of the vice chancellor for research, will discuss grant development stages, including:
    • preparation and planning
    • gathering preliminary data
    • determining statistical considerations
    • writing the proposal.

Also, to align a proposed study with the proper funding agency’s mission, the session will identify funding sources and look at funding trends. Overall, this session aims to provide tools and time management techniques to assist in developing a proposal, strengthen a study’s potential impact, and ultimately increase the fundability of the study. Montgomery will help proposal writers navigate and select the proper grant mechanism for studies, narrow a hypothesis, and provide a strategy for writing a competitive proposal, start to finish.

  • My NCBI – NIH Grants Annual Progress Reports: Meeting Publication Compliance: 10-11 a.m., May 14, Bennett Hall, Room 2020. Robin Taylor, project coordinator, pharmacology and experimental neuroscience, will demonstrate how to use My NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) when reporting publications in annual progress reports for NIH grants. She will demonstrate how to access the My NCBI system, pull publications from PubMed, add awards, delegate support staff to manage accounts, and format a PDF file to comply with the NIH mandate on using My NCBI for progress reports.
