UNMC Winter Workshop presentations Jan. 9

UNMC faculty and staff are invited to attend the final presentations of undergraduate students who will be attending the UNMC Winter Workshop. The presentations will take place between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, at the Eppley Institute, Room 2009.

Twenty-two students will attend the Winter Workshop, a weeklong program offered for undergraduate pre-physician, pre-physician assistant, and pre-nursing students from across Nebraska that focuses on agro-medicine and rural health issues. Students spend a day shadowing professionals in clinics/hospitals in small rural communities, and another day is spent at The Nebraska Medical Center and UNMC, shadowing physicians who are practicing in their special interest areas. The rest of the time is spent learning about rural health issues from top experts.

Their final presentations are the result of a group research project the students work on throughout the week. Topics that the students will research and present are the following:

  • Group 1 — West Nile Virus; Risk to Humans and Animals
  • Group 2 — Worker and Neighborhood Health Effects of Swine Confinement Operations
  • Group 3 — Food Borne Illness Secondary to E. coli 0157:H7 and Listeria Contamination during Food Processing
  • Group 4 — Risk of Childhood Injury on the Farm
  • Group 5 — Grain Suffocation and Respiratory Problems from Grain Handling.
