Employees turn out for holiday blood drive

Forty-one units of blood were collected during the UNMC Blood Drive on Dec. 31.

“Each unit of blood collected is able to help up to three patients,” said Peter Pellerito, a Center for Healthy Living official who organized the blood drive. “Therefore, donors at this drive were responsible for assisting as many as 123 patients in need. That is outstanding.”

Pellerito said that because of an increase in colds and flu around the blood drive, the Red Cross had him schedule extra appointments. A strong turnout of campus employees, though, resulted in a longer-than-usual wait for some people. Even so, very few complained, Pellerito said.

“The Red Cross should have realized how hearty the Med Center population is,” he quipped. “Seriously, the Red Cross is aware of how valuable people’s time is, and they do everything possible to make the donation process as short as possible.”

The next UNMC blood drive is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30. It will take place at the Center for Healthy Living.
