Dr. Romberger named interim chair of internal medicine

picture disc.Debra Romberger, M.D., associate professor in UNMC’s Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Section, has been named interim chairwoman for the department of internal medicine at UNMC.

“Dr. Romberger’s experience and many talents will ensure that the department moves forward while we search for a permanent department chair,” said College of Medicine Dean John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D. “Dr. Romberger is a tremendous asset to the department and I know that her leadership will ensure a smooth transition.”

Along with her interim chair responsibilities, Dr. Romberger continues to serve as vice chairwoman for research in the department of internal medicine.

“My goal as interim chair is to keep the department energized and moving forward while we wait for new leadership,” Dr. Romberger said. “My particular passion would be to continue making progress in building our clinical research infrastructure and supporting our basic science research, as well as making certain our department continues to excel in its teaching and clinical care missions. I also want to continue to grow our research partnerships in programs in The Lied, the new Durham Research Center and our relationship with the VA Medical Center.”

Dr. Romberger serves as a courtesy associate professor in the department of anesthesiology and is on the UNMC Faculty Senate. She also serves as chairwoman of the Human Studies Subcommittee at the Omaha Veterans Affairs Medical Center and is a member of the Medical Ethics Committee at The Nebraska Medical Center.

She earned her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City, Kan., in 1983, and joined UNMC in July 1990.
