UNMC launches ‘I work here’ image campaign

picture disc.Steve “Wess” Wessling doesn’t teach medical students, or do cancer research. Instead, he keeps the heating and air conditioning running and the power on for those who do.

Wessling, a utility operator in UNMC’s facilities management, is one of six UNMC employees featured in a new image campaign that boasts “I work here…maybe you should, too.”

UNMC’s Human Resources department will launch the campaign in Sunday’s Omaha World-Herald Careers section with UNMC employee Francisco (Frank) Aleman. An ad featuring UNMC’s Julie Ditter will appear in the Omaha World-Herald’s Business Profiles supplement on March 21.

“It’s already known that UNMC employs a great number of highly educated and talented people to perform research and educate tomorrow’s health care professionals,” said Rod Kelly, director of Human Resources Strategic staffing and compensation division. “We’re really excited about the ‘I Work Here’ campaign because it shows prospective employees who are not in a medical or academic field that UNMC employs thousands of people with other kinds of necessary skills and that these employees and the jobs they do are just as vital to the overall success of UNMC.”

picture disc.Besides Wessling, the campaign features Rachel Chapin, corporal in campus security; Martha Foxall, Ph.D., professor and department chair in the College of Nursing; Larry Walker, manager of information technology customer support services; Aleman, research technologist in UNMC’s genetics, cell biology and anatomy department; and Ditter, administrator in the pathology/microbiology department.

Print ads also will appear in newspapers such as the Omaha Star, Nuestro Mundo, the Chronicle of Higher Education and the Affirmative Action Register. Ads also will be placed in student newspapers at colleges and universities in the area.

“The campaign will build morale among current employees by reminding them that UNMC is a great place to work and the work they do is valued,” said Sandra McKenzie, staffing consultant in human resources strategic staffing and compensation division. “It also will encourage others to think of us as a premier employer.”

Each ad will list a Web address (UNMC.edu/workhere) and a phone number that prospective employees can use for more information.
