Eye research conference draws national experts

The 21st annual Gifford-Truhlsen Eye Research Conference will be held on Thursday and Friday (June 12-13) on the UNMC campus.

Robert E. (Gene) Anderson, M.D., Ph.D., of the Dean McGee Eye Institute at the University of Oklahoma, will deliver the Bernstein-Kroon Memorial Lecture at 3:45 p.m. on June 12 as part of a day of presentations by UNMC eye researchers. Dr. Anderson’s topic will be “Keeping Cones Alive When the Rods Are Dying.”

On Friday, June 13 the Gifford-Truhlsen Clinical Conference will feature a comprehensive continuing medical education (CME) course featuring world-renowned visiting faculty members, including:

  • Gifford Memorial Lecturer: C. Stephen Foster, M.D., Harvard Medical School.
  • Stanley M. Truhlsen, M.D., Lecturer: Neil R. Miller, M.D., Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
  • Judy and C. David Fritch, M.D., Lecturer: Samuel Masket, M.D., Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA.

The interactive program will combine didactic lectures and case-based clinical discussion to review the latest medical and surgical treatments in ophthalmology.

Thursday’s presentations, including Dr. Anderson’s lecture, will be held at the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute. Friday’s CME course will be held at the Truhlsen Events Center in the Sorrell Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for registered participants.
