Wellness Wednesday: OwL Ride registration open

Registration has opened for the fifth annual OwL Ride, Omaha’s nighttime urban cycling adventure. The unique recreational bike ride set for Saturday, July 12 is the largest annual night bicycle ride between Chicago and Denver.

Register and find more information.

The cost to register is $30 for riders 19 and older, $10 for 18 and under when registering with an adult.

Watch a video about the OwL Ride.

The OwL Ride gives riders a choice of an eight-mile short course and a 16-mile extended route, both beginning from Lewis and Clark Landing, a new starting point this year. The family friendly short course takes riders from Omaha’s riverfront into midtown Omaha. The extended course continues through the heart of Dundee and Aksarben Village before returning downtown via Field Club. Come join us on a cruise through the city with your nocturnal friends. You’ll see the city in a new light-by streetlight, moon light and star light (Omaha with Lights, the origin of the OwL name).

There will be both pre- and post-ride entertainment and the annual Bright Bikes bike decorating contest, as well as the Parliament Cup, awarded to the largest team of riders. There also will be an urban bike build-off between two bicycle mechanics from Bike Masters. Riders can vote for the best bike when they register online. Riders also will have a chance to win one of the bikes.

The ride benefits the Meyer Foundation for Disabilities, which supports much-needed services for adults with disabilities in the Omaha metro area.

Thanks to the proceeds from the OwL (Omaha With Lights) Ride, the foundation in recent years has been able to significantly expand available programming for the disabled, including sponsorship of regular social outings, dances, cooking classes and reading clubs.

Many of the programs are offered through the professional staff of UNMC’s Munroe-Meyer Institute, a renowned service provider in our area. Learn more about the Meyer Foundation’s work and mission.
