The Bariatrics Center is offering a discount to employees interested in beginning their weight loss program, called New Direction. The program is designed as the first step toward a new, healthier life.

Participants purchase meal replacements from the Bariatrics Center. Employees in the program receive an 18 percent discount on these products.

There are two program options offered:

The Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) is for people who want to lose at least 40 pounds. Patients are restricted to 800-900 calories per day which results in weight loss of two to five pounds per week. New Direction meal replacements are the sole source of nutrition on this program.

The Low Calorie Diet (LCD) is for people who want to lose less than 40 pounds. Patients are restricted to 900-1200 calories per day which results in a more gradual weight loss of one to three pounds per week. New Direction meal replacements are generally utilized to replace two meals per day. The third meal is made up of nutritionally balanced grocery foods purchased by the patient.

Both the VLCD and LCD programs are medically monitored. Pre-participation evaluations are completed to determine which program is best for you. The program includes weekly group sessions with a registered dietician on nutrition and behavior modification and low calorie/high protein meal replacement products (such as beverages, soups, bars).

Information sessions are held at 4 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of each month. For this month, sessions will be held tomorrow and Aug. 21. All sessions are held in the Bariatrics Center, located on the second floor of University Tower, just west of the Endoscopy Center.

Please register for an information session by calling 559-9500.
