Lookin’ at U – Jessica Tschirren

Jessica Tschirren

Jessica Tschirren

Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee. This week, we learn more about:

  • Name: Jessica Tschirren
  • Hometown: Center, Neb.
  • No. of years at UNMC: Eight and a half

Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.
I am director of the office of educational services in the College of Public Health. Our office is student services for the college, including all recruitment, admissions, records and registration activities. I am lucky to spend my days working with our outstanding students, staff and faculty in the College of Public Health.

Being a trusted resource is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a trusted resource you have at UNMC.

One of the trusted resources we rely on a lot is our fellow student services/student affairs directors in our partner UNMC colleges. We have a great team of professionals that collaborate in areas of academic and student affairs. They are a valuable resource and we count on each for guidance and partnership in matters that involve providing service to our students.

What is your favorite summer activity?
My favorite summer activities are golfing and horseback riding.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • Until I was 10 years old, our home did not have indoor plumbing or electricity and was built from logs my parents harvested. Because of this, I am very adept at making the best of very little and I’m really not that crazy about camping.
  • I live on an acreage with my husband Jayme, son Declan, two horses, seven chickens, a boxer named Gypsy and a cat named Mira.
  • I love travel and plan to spend a good part of the rest of my life exploring the best our planet has to offer.

Jessica is great to work with. She is a strong advocate for our students, and is always a voice of reason as we work through student service issues. And that all makes sense now that I know she grew up a la Abe Lincoln in a rustic log cabin!

I have had the pleasure of working with Jessica in the past when I first came to the UNMC. She is friendly and welcoming, and immediately put me at my ease. She is patient, considerate and generous with sharing her knowledge of policies and procedures. Jessica helped me get my feet wet in a very comfortable manner and I will always remember her kindness. That is quite an interesting beginning to your life, Jessica. 🙂
