Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.

I am a counselor by training, a leader through life, a mentor to many, and an eternal optimist who lives the dream of lifting up the community from the bottom up.

After so many years representing UNMC as a bilingual and bicultural outreach project specialist, I can proudly say I’ve earned the trust of my Latino community in Omaha through tenacity and effort. For me to work within this community has meant I needed to open doors so that I can educate simply, clearly and reliably on vital aspects needed to improve the quality of life of Latinos.

From tobacco prevention, breast cancer, cardiovascular diseases and other chronic illnesses, to mental health, I mentor Latinas through a formal educational process where they learn to become advocates and educators within their families and communities on health. All my projects and interventions are rich in culturally sensitive and empathetic content. I translate documents for the IRB and help faculty members by facilitating focus groups in Spanish and conducting studies within the Hispanic community. I have served as a host of an interactive live educational radio and television show in Spanish since 2004 aimed at educating and providing information about health issues and community services and resources.

Being a trusted resource is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time you witnessed a person or group act as a trusted resource at UNMC.
Athena Ramos is a trusted resource on Latino health issues, which has allowed her to successfully implement preventive health programs for Latinos at the community-level, but also offer her expertise in the area of cultural competency assisting the College of Nursing by facilitating a workshop to educate community health workers on cultural issues for working with the Latino community in Nebraska.

Antonia is truly a delight to work with, but most of all I have personally been blessed by her words of wisdom, kind and gentle spirit. I have seen first hand the impact and the difference she has made in so many lives. UNMC should be very proud to have her as a representative. I salute you my dear friend and colleague.
