Ricky Fulton

Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee. This week, we learn more about:

  • Name: Ricky Fulton
  • Hometown: Omaha
  • No. of years at UNMC: This is my first year as intramural coordinator, but in the past I have worked as an official for volleyball, softball and basketball games at UNMC. I still work as an official in addition to my other duties.

Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.

As intramural coordinator at UNMC, I coordinate the intramural sports for the UNMC students, faculty and staff. That involves scheduling the games, (volleyball, basketball, golf, softball), keeping the standings, and supervising the officials, in addition to marketing the program. Oh, and broomball, too — sign up for the upcoming Broomball League today!

“Commitment to excellence” is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us about a “commitment to excellence” you’ve witnessed at UNMC.

What I have seen over the years here in the intramural sports department is how committed the students are to excelling in their fields of study and research. Often, games have to be rescheduled because of a conflict with an important test or study session. And, when it comes to sports and letting off some steam, they excel at good sportsmanship and level of play.

What is your favorite fall activity?

We try to see every movie that comes out this time of year that has Oscar “buzz.” Our family loves to see films on the big screen.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I am a gourmet chef. (Including passing on the family spaghetti sauce recipe from my mother — it’s a secret.)
  • I have a degree in philosophy, and my first job upon graduation was selling newspapers on a street corner in San Francisco.
  • I won the Leota G. Norton Community Service Award from the United Way of the Midlands back in 2003 for organizing a paint-a-thon where we painted a very large house in North Omaha for a widowed woman.
