Sherry Andersen

Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee.
This week, we learn more about Sherry Andersen, accounting technician, oncology/hematology.

  • Name: Sherry Andersen
  • Hometown: Glendora, Calif. (But I’ve been in Omaha for almost 20 years, so technically, this is home.)
  • No. of years at UNMC: 11

Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.

My job has many duties. I invoice sponsors for research-related patient procedures, milestone visits and other related fees. I reimburse patient travel expenses for study visits, extend and close study financial accounts as needed, monitor ledgers for accuracy, reconcile purchase card transactions and monitor patient billing charges that hit our study accounts. I could go on — the list is long.

Working together is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time you witnessed a person or group work together at UNMC.

I work in the division of oncology/hematology. There are so many people who step up to the plate and make our division great. Many, many times our group has come together to accomplish wonderful things — to narrow it down to just one is impossible. We have had individuals jump in to learn new jobs when fellow employees are ill or leave. Others have taken on additional responsibilities when needed. I work with a fantastic group of people.

What is your favorite fall activity?

Ummmm, when it’s cold like this, absolutely nothing outside. Of course, tonight I get to try out my new gun at a shooting range. Maybe it will become a favorite — the range is indoors.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I got my first tattoo (I only have 3) and my first motorcycle at about the same time eight years ago.
  • I still love playing Sega and Nintendo games. My two adult-like kids like the new advanced stuff, and my husband of 24 years isn’t a player. So I sacrifice and play alone. Hee-hee.
  • This isn’t a secret, and I think everyone knows this about me, but I hate enclosed shoes. I usually wear sandals every day, except when there is snow on the ground or there are sub-zero temps. Today it is nine degrees outside and yes, I’m wearing sandals.
