Stairwell transforms into art gallery

You may have noticed new artwork in the stairwell of University Tower. It’s all part of the LiveGreen team’s efforts to get more employees using the stairs instead of the elevators, therefore conserving energy.

It’s been two years since the first mural went up, created by North High School art students and illustrates folks enjoying the outdoors.

Cindy Hanssen, manager of executive physicals at Nebraska Medicine and a LiveGreen member, coordinated the mural creations.

“We received a positive response from the first one and numerous suggestions for additional stairwells and hall areas to have a mural,” she said.

Local artist Stephen Kavanaugh was tapped to create the two new murals this month. An artist since age 5, Kavanaugh began painting in high school and fell in love with the art form.

“He prefers ‘in the moment’ paintings and enjoys interaction while he paints,” Hanssen said. “The evening staff and visitors provided some of that personal experience, which impacted the final product.”

Hanssen led LiveGreen’s fundraising efforts to obtain the funds to complete this latest project.

“It’s a pleasure to support our local artists and also provide this form of art to our employees,” she said.

Hanssen said work on a fourth mural began Sunday in the same stairwell.
