Broomball fever sweeping the campus
UNMC’s annual broomball league, shown above, is under way. The league, played on the UNMC ice rink at the Ruth and Bill Scott Student Plaza, holds games between 4 and 8 p.m. Mondays, and members of the UNMC community are invited to come and watch. For a sneak pick, check out this photo album.

Graduate student Urmi Basu recognized nationally for research
Urmi Basu, a graduate student in Dr. Matt Zimmerman’s laboratory in cellular & integrative physiology, received a Young Investigator Award from the Society for Free Radical Biology & Medicine at their annual conference in Seattle. Basu received the award for her presentation titled “Overexpression of redox-sensitive calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) in central neurons augments angiotensin II-induced hypertension.”

Dr. Feilmeier honored by Jaycees for commitment to community
Michael Feilmeier, M.D., ophthalmology and visual sciences and the Truhlsen Eye Institute, was named by the Omaha Jaycees as one of the members of the 82nd class of the 10 Outstanding Young Omahans. The award honors individuals between ages 21 and 40 who show exemplary commitment to improving the community while excelling in their professional careers.

Salsa event will help fund UNMC medical service trip
The Student Alliance for Global Health will host a salsa dancing event on Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Storz Trophy Room (formerly Rick’s Cafe Boatyard).The event will support a medical service trip to Nicaragua. Cover for the event is $5 per person, which will be donated to SAGH for the Nicaragua trip. In addition, the trip will receive a portion of the bar proceeds. The event begins at 7 p.m. with a salsa class held at 8:30 p.m. and will feature special guest DJs.

Holiday closings approach for Sorrell Center convenience store, lunch vendors

The Sorrell Center Convenience Store will be closed Dec. 22 through Jan. 2.
Also, the lunch vendors will not be serving at the Sorrell Center during this time period. Lunch vendors at the Durham Research Center will be available during this time, with the exception of the following dates: Dec. 24, 25, 26 and 31, and Jan. 1 and 2.

Discounted memberships to the Durham Museum available
