Sixty members of the UNMC High School Alliance are among the students taking classes at UNMC this academic year.

The students come from high schools around the Omaha area and take college-level classes at UNMC to prepare for health careers.

Today we meet:

  • Name: Allison Bartenhagen
  • High school: Gretna High School
  • Year: Senior

How did you get involved in the UNMC High School Alliance?

My mother has worked at UNMC for more than 10 years, so when she heard about the program she told me and I thought it sounded interesting. I talked with other Gretna students who had completed the program and decided to apply.

What sparked your interest in science?

Learning about the body and how it functions has always been fascinating to me. I have a brother with special needs, and that has exposed me to many aspects of health care which also sparked my interest in science.

What are your career aspirations?
After graduating from high school, I will be attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with the hopes of returning to UNMC for one of its professional programs. I just have not yet decided which one.

What has been the best part of your UNMC High School Alliance experience so far?

The best part of my experience so far has been making new friendships and having the opportunity to be taught by world-class instructors. I also am looking forward to creating many more memories along the way.
