Committee begins search for psychiatry chair

UNMC College of Medicine Dean John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., has appointed a 10-member search committee to identify candidates for the position of professor and chair of the department of psychiatry in UNMC’s College of Medicine.

“We are committed to finding an outstanding individual to lead the department of psychiatry to the next level in teaching, research and patient care,” Dr. Gollan said. “I’d like to thank the members of the search committee for their work and dedication in filling this critical role.”

The successful candidate is expected to have a proven record of academic, clinical and administrative leadership. The department is comprised of 78 employees, organized in four sections, and provides academic, research and clinical services at UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center the Omaha Veterans Administration Medical Center, and various other sites throughout the region.

William Berndt, Ph.D., professor and interim chairman of pharmacology, will chair the 10-member search committee. Other members of the committee include:


  • Pamela Carmines, Ph.D., professor, physiology and biophysics

  • Pierre Fayad, M.D., professor and chairman, neurological sciences

  • John Goldner, M.D., clinical professor, neurological sciences

  • Jane Potter, M.D., section chief, geriatrics, professor, internal medicine

  • William Roccaforte, M.D., associate professor, psychiatry

  • James Shull, Ph.D., professor and chairman, genetics, cell biology and anatomy

  • Michael Sitorius, M.D., professor and chairman, family medicine

  • Michael Sorrell, M.D., professor, internal medicine

  • Jon Thompson, M.D., professor, surgery
