Dr. Nancy Snyderman to speak next week

UNMC alumna Dr. Nancy Snyderman will speak to members of the UNMC campus at a special Grand Rounds on Thursday, March 5.

Dr. Snyderman, chief medical editor and correspondent for NBC News, will speak on “Health Care and the Media” from noon to 1 p.m. in the Durham Research Center Auditorium.

Dr. Snyderman, a 1977 graduate of the College of Medicine, is coming to campus for a special Student Senate-sponsored Leadership Summit on Thursday evening.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Snyderman return to her alma mater to engage with our students and the UNMC community,” said Student Senate President Krupa Savalia, Ph.D. “Dr. Snyderman’s diverse experiences showcase a unique career path in health care that will provide an interesting and enlightening story.”

Dr. Snyderman has garnered several of the industry’s most distinguished honors, including several Emmy Awards, an Alfred I. DuPont Award, an Edward R. Murrow Award, and a Gracie Award. She has reported on wide-ranging topics affecting all strata of society and has traveled the world extensively, reporting from many of the world’s most troubled areas.

Dr. Snyderman is on faculty in the department of otolaryngology — head and neck surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. She previously served as the medical correspondent at ABC News for 17 years, contributing to “20/20,” “Primetime,” and “Good Morning America.” She was a frequent substitute co-host on “Good Morning America.” She has been at NBC News since 2006.

Following medical school at UNMC, she continued with residencies in pediatrics and ear, nose, and throat surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. She joined the surgical staff at the University of Arkansas in 1983 and began her broadcasting career shortly after at KATV, the ABC affiliate in Little Rock.

Dr. Snyderman’s medical work has been widely published in peer review journals and she is the recipient of numerous research grants. She was awarded a Kellogg fellowship in 1987. She is a New York Times bestselling author, having written five books.

The Leadership Summit also is being sponsored by the Chancellor’s Office, the College of Medicine Alumni Association and the University of Nebraska Foundation.
