Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC’s mission, and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life. In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who will become tomorrow’s health care professionals. Today we meet:

  • Name: Tyler Chonis
  • Hometown: Omaha
  • Program/Year: College of Medicine, first year

List three songs on your playlist.

  • “Breezeblocks,” by alt-J
  • “You and I,” by Bassnectar
  • “Ignition (remix),” by R. Kelly

What sparked your interest in medicine?
“When I was younger, I always had a passion for helping others. The exhilarating feeling of doing something for someone else is unlike any other feeling out there. I knew I wanted to get into medicine when I realized that my strengths in the sciences and my curiosity as to how humans work and function could be very well utilized in my desire to do good toward others. I am excited to continue my passion and dream as I work toward becoming a physician.”

Your favorite study snack is:

Cookies (any and all types) and celery

Your favorite app is:
Spotify for sure. It has all the music in the world in one place!

Three things people may not know about you.

  • I am quite color blind (which can make aspects of medical school very difficult).
  • I have been known, on occasion, to eat entire heads of iceberg lettuce (the best type of lettuce).
  • I was adopted when I was a baby by the best parents a kid could ask for.

Tyler is a student who goes above and beyond. He is one or the UNMC E-Learning Student Program award winners working with a team of M1 students on the "Day in the Life of a Breast Cancer Patient".
