Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC’s mission, and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life.

In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who will become tomorrow’s health care professionals.

Today we meet:

  • Name: Madeline Howell
  • Hometown: Lincoln
  • Program/Year: Masters in Public Health with environmental and occupational health concentration

List three songs on your playlist:

  • “Paradise,” Coldplay
  • “One Shine,” Panacea
  • “How You Like Me Now?” The Heavy

What sparked your interest in public health?

My interest in public health started when I did my undergraduate thesis for my environmental studies bachelor’s degree in applied climate science by connecting UV radiation to melanoma occurrences in the country of New Zealand. As a result, I spent four months in New Zealand and began to develop an interest in environmental health, especially when connecting health issues with climate change.

Your favorite study snack is:

An apple (if I’m trying to be healthy) or Reese’s Puffs out of a box (when it’s go time and I’m studying for exams).

Your favorite app is:
Fitbit

Three things people may not know about you.

  • I’m secretly a thrill seeker and have bungee jumped and skydived.
  • I love Lord of the Rings and have been to New Zealand to see some of the movie sites.
  • I used to be a competitive swimmer and currently swim as an exercise while listening to music on my waterproof iPod shuffle.

Are you checking those apples for daminozide? Otherwise, you might want to stick with those Reese's Puffs 😉
