Gary Yee, Pharm.D., recognized as leader in field

Gary Yee, Pharm.D., first became interested oncology and the drugs used to treat people with cancer while working in a research lab as an undergraduate at the University of Washington.

Now, Dr. Yee, professor and associate dean for academic affairs in the UNMC College of Pharmacy, has been named one of 25 Top Pharmacy Professors by MedicalTechnologySchools.com.

The educational web publisher aimed “to find the most cutting-edge, influential, and exceptional pharmacy professors teaching today. These professors are leaders in their fields, trend-setters for pharmacological research, and noted speakers and educators.”

“I was delighted to see Gary recognized as one of this nation’s top 25 pharmacy professors,” said College of Pharmacy Dean Courtney Fletcher, Pharm.D.

The list was chosen based on active teaching, publication, thought leadership and extracurricular involvement.

“Gary has consistently achieved excellence in all of these areas,” Dr. Fletcher said. “This excellence is seen, for example, in his editorship of ‘Pharmacotherapy,’ which is a standard text in virtually all colleges of pharmacy in the United States, and his election as president of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, which is the national leadership organization focused on advancing clinical pharmacy practice and research.”

It’s yet another sign the College of Pharmacy is raising its national profile, Dr. Fletcher said.

“Gary’s recognition also exemplifies why the UNMC College of Pharmacy is regarded as one of the best in the country — because of the dedication and commitment of our faculty to education, research and service,” Dr. Fletcher said.

Dr. Yee’s primary research interests are in the cost and cost-effectiveness of drugs used in patients with cancer. His research findings have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Lancet. He earned his Pharm.D. at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and was a postdoctoral fellow at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. He also worked at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Florida before coming to UNMC in 1998.
