Wellness: ‘Fitness That Works’ challenge

Exercising doesn’t have to be hard work.

That’s the idea behind “Fitness That Works,” a new UNMC wellness event that begins April 6.

Developed by the Wellness Council of America, “Fitness That Works” incorporates seven “simple moves” that, when performed consistently and correctly, can make you stronger, healthier, more productive and much more — and many can be performed during the work day.

The moves:

  • Balance.
  • Reach.
  • Step.
  • Push-pull.
  • Squat-lift.
  • Twist.
  • Lunge.

Participants also can log up to three 10-minute bouts of cardio per day.
Most of the moves are strengthening exercises that consist of 10 to 20 consecutive repetitions of a motion to promote muscular development. “Reach” includes stretches that emphasize flexibility and “Balance” focuses on body positions that promote coordination.

No classes, fitness center membership or costly equipment are required. These simple moves can be performed multiple times throughout the day at work or home as fitness increases. They are proven to improve strength, coordination, balance and productivity while decreasing your risk for injury.
These moves are simple and easy for beginning exercisers, and they will help create fitness benefits.

And since it’s more fun to exercise with friends, “Fitness That Works” will be a team effort. Teams of up to 10 members will work together to earn these fitness points, with each team captain receiving a copy of the “Fitness that Works: Simple Moves to Make Exercise Happen from 9 to 5” book. (Individuals can purchase their own copy of the book for $5.) Team members will earn one point for each “moves” activity completed daily and additional fitness points for engaging in cardio activities such as swimming, biking and walking.

The points are not the focus of this fitness effort. At the conclusion of the “Fitness That Works” wellness challenge, all individuals who have participated will be awarded T-shirts. Also, every member of each team whose participants all track at least one activity for at least five days each week during the six weeks of the program will earn a SPRI Xerstretch Strap.

Get started today by enrolling in the “Fitness That Works” wellness challenge. This six-week wellness program is designed to challenge teams of employees to incorporate the seven “simple moves” plus cardiovascular fitness activities into their daily routines.
