The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is taking shape, and each phase brings adjustments to road and foot traffic.
The below grade pedestrian tunnel and utility work at Durham Research Plaza (formerly 45th Street) is now complete and ready to reopen. Additional site utilities and building preparation along Dewey Avenue is set to begin this spring, resulting in temporary street closure. The following notifications will be posted as changes continue to occur. Employees are asked to mention these updates to colleagues and continue to observe all safety and directional signage around the site.

Road reopens at Durham Research Plaza (formerly 45th Street)
Beginning Saturday May 23, Durham Research Plaza, including the west sidewalk, will reopen between Dewey Avenue and Emile Street. Access to Lot 2 (Patient/Visitor Green Parking) west of the Durham Outpatient Center will be maintained and construction traffic will continue. Pedestrians should exercise caution when crossing the street.
Temporary road closure of Dewey Avenue
Also, starting Tuesday May 26, Dewey Avenue will be closed until summer 2016. This will allow site utilities and other construction activities to progress. Those planning to park in Lot 31 (near the Munroe-Meyer Institute and J.P. Lord School) will need to use the reopened Durham Research Plaza to access parking. Temporary road closure signage will be posted to assist with revised traffic flow and ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians.
Enhancements to Lot 2 (Green) Visitor/Patient Parking at the Durham Outpatient Center
Beginning the week of May 25, contractors will begin improvements and repairs to the Lot 2 (Green) parking structure located adjacent to the Durham Outpatient Center (DOC). Improvements will include new traffic coatings, lighting, security upgrades, signage, and striping to improve both pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow. The enhancements are comprised of regularly scheduled maintenance, as well as upgrades related to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center project. Work is expected to be completed in the summer of 2016.
Lot 2 also will have phased restrictions to the east entry/exit lanes from the DOC circle drive, as work progresses on the Emile Street skywalk. An entry and exit lane will be maintained throughout the work. Beginning immediately, the impacts will be clearly marked and run intermittently through the summer.
