On May 27, UNMC also will host Steven Stice, Ph.D., University of Georgia, who will speak at 10:30 a.m. in the Durham Research Center, Room 1004. Dr. Stice’s presentation on “The Utility of Stem Cells in Neural and Orthopedic Injury and Drug Discovery” is supported by the Nebraska Educational Biomedical Research Association (NEBRA), V.A. Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System and the UNMC Regenerative Medicine Program.

Ted Mikuls, M.D., professor of rheumatology and immunology, will be speaking on “Rheumatoid Arthritis: Lessons Learned from U.S. Veterans,” from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Education Conference Room, Room 1005, first floor on the VA campus.

The presentation is part of the V.A. Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System observance of National V.A. Research Week, which concludes Friday.

Dr. Mikuls is director of the Omaha VA Rheumatoid Arthritis/Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs Clinic. In addition to his speech, a tour of the center’s research areas will be given to new congressional liaisons and there will be a presentation of the Friends of Omaha VA Research Award. At 4 p.m., a Memorial Day event for veterans will take place in front of the VA Medical Center.
