About 30 UNMC employees hit the pavement Tuesday to promote fitness and history.

Howard Hamilton, author of a book on Omaha history called “Believe it, Omaha, (or Not)!,” led two, 60-minute historic walking tours through the nearby Gold Coast neighborhood. Hamilton has been an Omaha history instructor at Metro Community College for the past 23 years.

“The tour promoted walking in a fun, unique and informative way,” said Jayme Nekuda of the Center for Healthy Living.

In June, Nekuda launched the UNMC Walking Club by inviting UNMC employees to walk the Field Club Trail, which runs south of the campus.

During Tuesday’s tour, Hamilton shared the history of the Gold Coast area, including an explanation of why there are generally only two mansions per block. According to Hamilton, the open space between the mansions – which is now filled by apartment buildings — was for horses.

Next month’s walking club activity will be a climate-controlled walk on the Center for Healthy Living track. Participants will be able to use the facility and learn more about a limited-use membership, which enables walkers to use the locker rooms and walking track for $10 a month. Watch UNMC Today for more details on the event.
