TravelSmart convert finds commuting easy

With the TravelSmart program now under way, we spoke with:

  • Name: Doreen Morrissey
  • Position: HR associate for Facilities Planning & Management
  • Years at UNMC/Nebraska Medicine: Two.

What method(s) of active transportation do you use?
Bus.

How long have you been using active transportation?
Since the new TravelSmart program began.

Why do you take the bus?
Mostly to not have to deal with traffic and crazy drivers. It’s wonderful! Saving money and getting to spend that time reading is good, too. It’s amazing the things you notice on your drive in when you aren’t driving!

What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you while using active transportation?
Long story, simplified: My husband dropped me at the stop for a downtown bus to get to work in the morning, and the same driver was driving when I hopped on to head to Village Pointe at the end of my day to meet him for dinner and to go home. The driver and I recognized each other, and he was a little confused as to where I was going. We had a good laugh about my “testing out” different routes!

Would you recommend this to other employees/students? Why or why not?
Absolutely! Once you figure out what busses/routes you need to use, it is easy to get on and let someone else tackle the traffic.

Anything else you’d like to share?
I’ve had some very nice bus drivers who have gone above and beyond to assist me in getting acquainted with different routes on the bus system.
