Olson Center to mark World Breastfeeding Week

UNMC’s Olson Center for Women’s Health will mark World Breastfeeding Week this year with a series of events, with more activities planned for later in the month, as well.

There will be a breastfeeding education table on display in the Olson Center offices, in the fourth floor of the Durham Outpatient Center, from today through Friday.

In addition, throughout the week in the DOC’s West Atrium, there will be jewelry and breastfeeding supplies for sale.

From 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 25 at the third floor of the Maurer Center for Public Health, best-selling author and pediatrician Jen Thmas, M.D., will present on “Meeting Your Breastfeeding Goals by Understanding Your Body and Your Baby.” The event will also feature information on breastfeeding, infant care, pregnancy care, labor and delivery options and other topics. (Shopping and refreshments will be available.) The event is free and open to the community but reservations are requested at 402-559-6345.

Finally, on Aug. 26 from 7:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Breastfeeding: Baby’s Natural Choice Conference, featuring keynote speakers James McKenna, Ph.D. and Dr. Thomas, will be held at the La Vista Conference Center.

The purpose of the conference is to enable the learner to increase breastfeeding success through focused training on topics such as infant sleep physiology and safe sleeping habits, components in breastmilk that affect health outcomes, feeding methodology, and breastfeeding support strategies.

The conference is geared to physicians (OB/GYN, pediatric, and family medicine), nurses, lactation consultants, registered dietitians, medical nutrition therapists, residents, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, breastfeeding advocates, social workers, and students.

Registration is $115 or $50 for students. For more information or to register, click here.
