Presentation explores the ‘Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben’

Members of the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine community are invited to the presentation “Archiving Quivera: Omaha’s Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben,” by Carrie Wieners Meyer, curator of the Durham Museum, at noon on Sept. 22 in the Sorrell Center, Room 1005.

The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben. King and Queen of Ak-Sar-Ben. The mythical kingdom of Quivera. These may be familiar names to most Omaha residents, but the origin and history of The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation, Omaha’s premier philanthropic organization, remains elusive for many.

The Durham Museum is home to the entire historical archive of this evolving organization. Using photos, documents, costumes, and more, Wieners Meyer will unlock some of the mysteries surrounding Ak-Sar-Ben and demonstrate how Omaha would not be what it is today without the entrepreneurial spirit of the group, its commitment to the citizens of Omaha, and its philanthropic investments in the city.

Employees are encouraged to bring a lunch.

The event is offered through the Time Travelers partnership, which provides free museum admission for UNMC and Nebraska Medicine employees, students and their immediate families, with valid identification. The partnership also offers lectures, workshops and other events on the medical center campus.
