What will I see when Microsoft XP Service Pack 2 is installed?

Beginning today (Aug. 16), Microsoft will begin releasing a major update for Windows XP that provides better protection against hackers, viruses and worms. This update will appear on your machine as a “Critical Windows Update.” Microsoft is randomizing the delivery of the update through its internal technology. Therefore, ITS is uncertain when you will receive the update.

The major new features include:

  • Windows Firewall
  • Pop-up Blocker
  • Security Center

For the most current information, go to the ITS Web site. If you have additional questions or concerns, contact the HelpDesk at 559-7700.

Windows Firewall is a protective boundary that monitors and restricts information that travels between your computer and a network or the Internet. This provides a line of defense against someone who might try to access your computer from outside the Windows Firewall without your permission.
What you will see: You will receive a screen that is a “Windows Security Alert” with the following choices:

  • Keep Blocking
  • Unblock
  • Ask Me Later

If you recognize the program or trust the publisher, you can unblock it. Microsoft on Windows Firewall

NOTE: UNMC staff using campus developed applications (i.e. Track, Campus Business Applications, Research Administration, HPTC, Telephone Billing, Course Management) will be asked what action to take when starting and executing certain functions. Users should click on UNBLOCK when asked about utility programs such as wget, ftp, and post.

Pop-up Blocker is turned on in Internet Explorer and set to the medium setting, which means it will block most automatic pop-ups. The default settings for the pop-up blocker allow you to see pop-ups that are opened when you click a link or button on a Web site. Pop-up Blocker also will play a sound and show the Information Bar when a pop-up is blocked. You can adjust these settings so that Pop-up Blocker works the way you want it to. Security Center helps you manage your Windows security settings. To help protect your computer, make sure the three security essentials are marked ON. The three security settings are:

  • Firewall
  • Automatic Updates
  • Virus Protection
