Alumni reunion set for this weekend

Phil Smith, M.D., will receive the College of Medicine Alumni Chapter's Honorary Alumnus Award at the Alumni Reunion Weekend Awards Banquet.

More than 200 UNMC alumni and their guests from the colleges of medicine, nursing and pharmacy will return to Omaha and the UNMC campus this weekend for events as part of the Alumni Reunion Weekend.

Honor years for the reunion are 1955, 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010 and Half Century Club members (those who graduated before 1965).

This morning, College of Medicine Class of 1965 alum Robert Travnicek, M.D., will discuss the first responders who stayed behind when Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Mississippi. His presentation, at 8 a.m. in the Maurer Center for Public Health, Room 3013, will be based on the book “Katrina Mississippi: Voices from Ground Zero.”

Activities during Alumni Weekend include: walking tours of campus, a narrated Ollie the Trolley tour of Omaha, the Welcome Back lunch, a rare book room open house at the McGoogan Library, continuing education, and the annual Celebration & Awards Banquet.
