2015 Employee Engagement Survey update

Over the last few months, employee relations department in UNMC Human Resources has been meeting with each of the business unit leaders, sharing the organization’s 2015 Employee Engagement Survey results.

During these meetings, the engagement survey results were reviewed, areas of opportunities discussed, and recommendations/suggestions for action planning presented.

Open forums

To find out more information about the 2015 engagement survey results please plan on attending one of the Open Forums scheduled for Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the Sorrell Center, Room 3002 or Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. in the Sorrell Center, Room 3002.

Now that each senior leader has the information, it is expected that each business unit leader will roll out the survey results and create action plans for their respective units. Regular follow up by human resources will take place to offer assistance and gauge progress.

There were five identified areas as an organization UNMC can focus on to improve overall work environment:

  • Trust
  • Communication
  • Manager Effectiveness/Performance Management
  • Future/Vision/Values
  • Recognition

Earlier this year, UNMC partnered with Nebraska Medicine and created a joint mission statement to begin to impact employees’ knowledge around the importance of understanding the future/vision of our organization. The partnership continued with UNMC and Nebraska Medicine colleagues beginning to work on the development of organizational values that will create a standard for all employees. So there has already been progress on two of the identified areas.

Focus going forward will be on recognizing our employees, improving communication, building trust and improving manager effectiveness.

Specific ideas include:

  • Expanding on some of the leadership training currently offered to include topics that will address building trust and effective communication.
  • Holding roundtable meetings to gather ideas around ways to improve communication at UNMC.
  • Listening tours with the chancellor and the UNMC vice chancellors where employees will have the opportunity to ask questions.
  • Building in accountability for each of the business unit leaders to address at least one of the identified areas of opportunity by regular follow up by human resources.
  • Adding various management resources (articles, tutorials, videos, etc.) on these topics on the internal professional website, as well as promoting all of the classes and seminars currently offered to improve manager effectiveness.
  • Partnering with outside consultants who will offer targeted programs to assist in improving communication, building trust and improving manager effectiveness.

One of the lowest rated items on the survey was whether or not anything would be done with the survey results. UNMC takes the survey feedback very seriously and will keep you updated on our progress of the actions related to that feedback.
