LCME gives College of Medicine full accreditation

The UNMC College of Medicine has been notified by its accrediting body, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), that the college’s “warning” status has been lifted and the college is fully accredited through 2022.

The LCME visited UNMC in October 2013 as part of the college’s first full-scale review in eight years. At that time, the LCME notified the College of Medicine that it would be accredited but with “warning” status. The college received this status because the LCME identified seven standards (out of the 131 reviewed) that were out of compliance.

Dr. Britigan said the new notification from LCME signifies that all standards have now been met.

He said, “The LCME site visit two years ago served as a stimulus for us to undertake a major review of the curriculum and better prepare to train the next generation of physicians to practice in the new environment of health care delivery.”

Dr. Britigan added, “Successfully addressing the areas of non-compliance was no small task and involved the efforts of several task forces and a multitude of faculty, staff and students. To all the people who were part of this initiative, I want to extend my deepest gratitude. This was a learning situation for our college, and I have no doubt that we have emerged as a stronger college.”
