University of Nebraska Medical Center Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., was honored Nov. 7 by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) with the organization's Outstanding Service Award for 2015.
The award, which recognizes individuals whose work has a major impact on the quality of medical education in North America, has only been awarded three times, said John Fogarty, M.D., dean of the Florida State University College of Medicine and chair of the LCME. The LCME is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as an accrediting agency for medical education programs leading to the M.D. degree.
Dr. Gold has been involved in the LCME since 2008, serving as the organization's co- chair from 2011-13 and as chair from 2013-14. The award was presented at the LCME Service Recognition Reception and Award Ceremony Saturday in Baltimore. The presentation was part of the Association of American Medical Colleges Annual Meeting.
Dr. Gold's accomplishments included the transition from a pure accrediting body to an accrediting body that works equally hard or harder to help medical schools help themselves to enhance programs and student success.
Dr. Gold credited remarkable volunteer board members, volunteer survey members and a dedicated, visionary and thoughtful team of staff and leaders who help set the foundation for excellence and a clear dedication to the quality of North American medical education.
Dr. Gold said he has been honored to work with some great people at the LCME over the years. He had special praise for Barbara Barzansky, Ph.D., and Dan Hunt, M.D., co-secretary leaders, and board chairs, including Valerie Parissi, M.D., Lois Nora, M.D., J.D., Christopher Colenda, M.D., and Arthur Ross, M.D.
"Together we have helped to build the future, together we have become a family," Dr. Gold said.
Dr. Fogarty praised Dr. Gold for his tireless service to the LCME. "Dr. Gold served as a member of the LCME for six years, chaired the LCME during his final year on the committee, and has chaired numerous other committees, work groups and survey teams," Dr. Fogarty said. "His calm, evidence-based leadership style guided the LCME through a significant period of change, from the surge of new medical schools and expansion of the number of distributed campuses, to the reformatting of the LCME accreditation standards.
"He also was instrumental in the development of a formal relationship between the LCME and the Canadian Accreditation Body (CACMS) and helped formalize the 75-year sponsoring relationship between the AMA and the AAMC," Dr. Forgarty said. "Dr. Gold's generosity of time and energy, and his dedication to the quality of medical education are greatly appreciated by the LCME. "His efforts have made a significant difference and contributed greatly to our success."
