Wellness: Skating events set

The UNMC Ice Rink will be hosting two events in the coming weeks. If you enjoy skating, consider attending these on-campus activities.

Holiday Skate Day

On Dec. 11, UNMC students and employees are invited to participate in a Holiday Skate Day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Strap on some skates, do a few laps around the UNMC Ice Rink to the tune of favorite holiday classics, and enjoy hot chocolate and cookies. Everyone who participates (either by skating, stopping by The Durham Museum booth or enjoying hot chocolate) also will be entered into a drawing for some amazing raffle prizes.

Stop by over the lunch hour and celebrate the holiday season at the UNMC Ice Rink.

As a reminder, admission to the ice rink is free for all UNMC and Nebraska Medicine employees and students.

Skate to Fill a Plate

On Dec. 13, UNMC and community partner iSkateOmaha will host a food drive for the Food Bank for the Heartland from 5 to 6:30 p.m. featuring a figure skating exhibition and open skating. Cost to attend and skate is one non-perishable food item.

During the exhibition, local skaters will skate to music of their choice, and training skaters and coaches are invited to perform as well, with solos, duets and group numbers welcome.

There will be open skating after the show.

The deadline to register to perform a skating routine is Dec. 11. Call 402-290-1920 or email Ricky Fulton for information or to register.

The event is sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating.

UNMC intramural curling league registration opens

UNMC is now accepting registrants for a Wednesday night curling league. The cost per team is only $10.

Because the rink at UNMC is half the size of a regulation rink, the rules will be modified.

There will be a practice curling session on the ice from 1 to 3 p.m. on Dec. 8 and 14.

League play begins Jan. 6 and will continue on Jan. 13, 20 and 27.

Registration is open through Dec. 24. Call 402-290-1920 or email Ricky Fulton for information or to register.

The rink is located just east of 42nd Street, midway between Emile Street and Dewey Avenue on the north side of the Sorrell Center for Health Science Education building.

Free parking is available in Lot 4 (southeast corner of 42nd and Emile St.) and Lot 15S (surface lot on 40th Street between Dewey & Emile streets) located on the north and east sides of the Student Life Center.
