Marlene Novotny

Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee.

This week, we learn about:

  • Name:
    Marlene Novotny
  • Hometown: Ashland, Neb.
  • No. of years at UNMC: Six

Tell us a bit about what you do.
In September 2014, I joined the chancellor’s office support team, where I mainly coordinate UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D.,’s travel and transcribe and send his written correspondence, in addition to helping with the various duties of the team in this very busy office. I started six years ago as an administrative assistant in the UNMC Department of Ophthalmology, supporting multiple ophthalmologists and then later assisting the new chair, Quan Dong Nguyen, M.D. While in ophthalmology, I scheduled students for their M3 and M4 rotations, helped organize the Gifford-Truhlsen Day and managed doctors’ calendars and travel, as well as being the move coordinator when the department moved to the Truhlsen Eye Institute.

Tell us of a time you witnessed an example of your favorite brand value at UNMC.
I witness “Working Together” every day in the chancellor’s office. There is a dedicated group of administrative assistants who pull together as a team to keep the chancellor’s office running smoothly.

What are your favorite winter activities?
I enjoy antiquing, estate sales and love a good estate auction! I have four children, the youngest of which is a senior in high school, and I spend a good deal of time on the bleachers enjoying his basketball games. I love spending time with my husband and family playing cards or board games, watching movies or just hanging out enjoying a margarita.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I have the world’s best margarita recipe and I am happy to share it.
  • I went skydiving for my 50th birthday this past summer, as it was on my bucket list.
  • I have a tattoo of a pansy on my ankle, which I decided to get on my 40th birthday, but I didn’t muster up the courage until I was 42!
