Student spotlight: Meet Trang Hoang

Trang Hoang

Trang Hoang

Education is one of the four pillars of UNMC’s mission and our students are the lifeblood of that aspect of campus life.

In UNMC Today’s Student Spotlight, we get to know some of these students, who will become tomorrow’s health care professionals.

Today we meet:

  • Name: Trang Hoang
  • Hometown: Omaha. My family has lived here for 12 years, but I was born and raised in Saigon, Vietnam, so I consider both as hometowns.
  • Program/Year: Second year, master of public health in environmental, agriculture and occupational health

List three songs on your playlist.

I actually do not have a playlist but I can name three songs I have listened to from time to time:

  • “Everything,” Michael Buble
  • “Believe,” Josh Groban
  • “Don’t Know Why,” Nora Jones

What sparked your interest in public health?
Public health has not always been a career I wanted to pursue. I actually stumbled upon it, and it was like I found a missing piece of the puzzle. Now that I am here at UNMC, it confirms my career vocation in this field. I have prior exposure and experiences in direct clinical health; however, I think public health fits me better because it allows me to incorporate both aspects of health for the population and health for the environment. I care deeply for the environment and strive to be a compassionate stewardess of the earth. More importantly, the mission of public health inspires me because it focuses strongly on prevention instead of treatment. I believe that when we are more prevention-oriented, we will not only have good health but great quality of life as well.

Your favorite study snack is:
Nuts and fruits. A walk can be a great “snack” because we often mistake our boredom or desire to stand up from our desks for hunger, so that’s why we snack. I have a walking partner and we often indulge ourselves on the “snack” of walking.

Your favorite app is:

Right now it is Outlook Mobile app.

Three things people may not know about you.

  • I hiked 40 miles over three days on the Appalachian Trails and considered going the entire distance because I saw a few women on the trail doing 2,200 miles.
  • I was a Jesuit volunteer in Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Boston.
  • I strive to have a mental, physical and spiritual balance in life.
